Deponents are verbs that have middle or passive endings but are active in meaning.'Edit

The word "deponent" means "set aside." A deponent is a verb which has "set aside" its original present indicative active forms, or at least the active forms are not used very often. Instead, a deponent verb is almost always seen in its middle/passive forms, with middle or passive personal endings, And its middle/passive forms usually bear a meaning or definition in the active voiceEdit

Primary Mediopassive Personal Endings

1st  ομαι                        ομεθα

2nd  ει/ῃ                        εσθε

Deponent AoristsEdit

Deponent Aorists

Since deponents (verbs that have middle or passive endings but are active in meaning) can be middle or passive in their inflection, their aorist forms are either middle or passive

Most deponents have middle aorists; some have passive

There is no regular rule for this, the verbs must be memorized

Some passive aorist  deponents

βούλομαι > ἐβουλήθην

δύναμαι > ἐδυνήθην

ἐπίσταμαι > ἠπιστάμην

ὀργίζομαι > ὠργίσθην

πορεύομαι > ἐπορεύθην

ATHEMATIC VERBS THAT HAPPEN TO ALSO BE DEPONENTS

Some verbs form endings on the present stem without a thematic vowel

These verbs tend to be basic, older verbs

They are also deponents (they have mediopassive endings but are active in meaning)

-δύναμαι ; I am able

-κεῖμαι ; I lie
